The Sault Area Hospital has announced it is now offering what it describes as a novel treatment for advanced prostate cancer.  Funded by Cancer Care Ontario, Xofigo is a radiopharmaceutical intravenous injection used to treat symptomatic prostate cancer when other lines of treatment have failed such as surgery or radiation and the cancer has spread to bones but not to organs.  Radiation Oncologist Dr. Julie Bowen says the treatment does more than lengthen the survival time…

Dr. Bowen says studies have shown additional survival time of 8 months…

Dr. Julie Bowen says this is a fairly new procedure…

Our hospital, was the first facility in the northeast to treat patients using this innovative therapy.  The procedure is now also available in Sudbury.  To date, three Sault Area Hospital patients have received the first injection of a 6-month treatment regimen.  Patients receive one injection a month.   It’s estimated that 12 to 15 patients will receive the treatment at Sault Area Hospital each year.
