City council has decided to fill the vacant ward six position through an appointment process rather than hold a byelection which wouldn’t have taken place until early September at a cost of 48-thousand dollars.
Council agreed that it didn’t make sense to go through the effort of holding a byelection at that cost considering the successful candidate would only have a year remaining on the term.
It’s hoped a candidate can be appointed by council at the next meeting on June 26th and be in place in time for the July council meeting.
Through the city’s appointment process, interested candidates will be given a chance to put their name forward with the process to begin immediately with a deadline of early next week.
The list of candidates would be brought back to council for its June 26th meeting for a decision.
The ward six council seat became vacant when Ross Romano was elected on June 1st as the Sault’s new MPP.
