Sault Ste. Marie:  The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) has unveiled a multi-tiered plan to create a 450-seat auditorium at St. Mary’s College (SMC).
Plans for the new theatre at SMC involve a three-staged process that begins within a month with a call to tender for the first two stages of the multi-million dollar project.  In a presentation to the HSCDSB Board of Trustees, representatives from EPOH Architects outlined a proposal that would see $600,000 dedicated to an initial stage that would allow for seating and other upgrades to be completed to the area set aside for the auditorium when the school was constructed.
The initial work would allow for use of the space for assemblies, liturgies, and other internal events, while the second phase of the project, estimated to cost $100,000, would incorporate multimedia components allowing for expanded use of the area.
“We’re excited to see this project move forward.  Our initial plan for the new St. Mary’s College was to ensure that there would be a space that gave students an opportunity to show their artistic abilities.  It’s an integral component of high school life,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.
The final phase of the project, contingent on further fundraising, would see the auditorium amenities completed.  The Board’s ‘As One’ fundraising campaign is ongoing.  Information on the campaign is available at www.asoneSMC.com.
