Sault Ste. Marie – David Orazietti MPP is attending the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s (NOSM) 10th Anniversary Celebration Reception today and is pleased to announce the provincial government’s support for NOSM’S five day international conference taking place in Sault Ste. Marie from June 20-25, 2016.

“Our government’s decision to build the first medical school in Northern Ontario in 30 years continues to bring benefits to Sault Ste. Marie and the northern region,” said Orazietti.  “This provincial investment for the ICEMEN conference will provide valuable networking opportunities for medical researchers, educators, students and health professionals to share new ideas and emerging trends in the field of medicine.”

The NOSM’s Community Engaged Medical Education for the North (ICEMEN) conference has received the following provincial funding:

$100,000 Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) funding through the Northern Community Capacity Building Program

$40,000 Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities – Postsecondary Education Fund for Aboriginal Learners – Targeted Initiatives Fund

The ICEMEN international conference will bring together over 300 researchers and leaders from Canada and around the world.  The conference will focus on future research opportunities in the North, sharing current best practices and emerging trends in medical education.  The conference will also feature the Indigenous Research Gathering, which provides an opportunity for researchers to come together to acknowledge past experiences, conduct ceremonies for healing, generate future opportunities for positive and respectful relationships between Indigenous communities and researchers.

The NOHFC Northern Community Capacity Building Program, helps northern communities develop the capacity to promote, attract and support economic growth in the existing and emerging priority economic sectors identified in the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario.

” Expanded first year Undergraduate Medical Education spaces in Ontario by 38 per cent between 2004/05 and 2011/12 – 260 new spaces.
” Increased the number of family medicine Postgraduate Medical Education residency positions in Ontario by 160 per cent between 2004/05 and 2013/14 – 326 new positions.
