news-doctor discipline  Local family physician Dr. Douglas Brooks has been found to have committed an act of professional misconduct by a discipline committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.  Dr. Brooks has a family practice at the Group Health Centre and also works as an investigating coroner and his hearing before the committee was held yesterday.  The Registrar has suspended Dr. Brooks’ certificate of registration for 5 months and he has been ordered to undergo individualized instruction in medical ethics with an instructor approved by the College for a period of 6-months.  He must also pay the College costs of 5-thousand dollars.  The professional misconduct disciplinary charges against Dr. Brooks involved inappropriately accesssing and without consent, the health records of two patients on a number of occasions between 2003 and 2014.  The charges also relate to his actions as a coroner in all or part of the investigation into a patient’s death despite a real or perceived conflict of interest due to a close personal relationship.
