CitySSM   The outdoor rink and tennis courts located near the former William Merrifield School have been saved and will continue to be operated by the City beyond this winter.  City council voted against a staff recommendation that would have effectively shut down the facilities and seen the City operate an outdoor rink at Mike Zuke Park in ward 6 which is located approximately 3 kilometres west of William Merrifield School.  Council instead approved a motion to accept an offer from the Algoma District School Board to purchase a parcel of land for a dollar while continuing to operate the rink and tennis courts on the property to be named William Merrifield Park.  The Algoma District School Board has received an offer from a local developer interested in developing a new subdivision on the rest of the property at the school site.  Council made the decision despite the warning from city staff that the rink shack and tennis courts must be replaced at a cost of up to 100-thousand dollars.
