Algoma Public Health has issued a boil water advisory for the residents of Richards Landing on St. Joseph Island who receive their drinking water from the municipal water supply.

Water samples tested positive for the presence of total coliforms and E. coli.

Total coliforms are a group of bacteria commonly found in the environment, for example in soil or vegetation, as well as the intestines of humans and animals. E.coli is bacteria that is only found in the intestines of people and animals and is usually the result of sewage contamination of a nearby source.

The Township of St. Joseph is currently in the process of notifying residents in the affected area with hand delivered notices.

Until further notice, residents must bring water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute to ensure it is safe to drink. This also includes:

o All drinking water, including making coffee and tea
o Brushing teeth
o Washing fruits and vegetables
o Drinking water from public drinking fountains in this area

Adults and teenagers may shower as long as no water is swallowed. Younger children should be sponge-bathed instead of bathing in a tub as they are likely to swallow the water. If you do not wish to boil your water, use another water supply known to be safe (i.e. bottled water).

This boil water advisory will remain in effect until water samples confirm the water is safe. This is a localized problem, and only households and businesses in the affected area will receive the hand delivered notice.
