The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is participating in the Province-wide Lock it OR Lose it Campaign and warning motorists about the dangers of property and identity theft resulting from unlocked vehicles or the leaving of valuables in plain view. The campaign is sponsored by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police’s (OACP) and encourages drivers to take precautions to protect their vehicles and vehicle contents from theft, particularly during the holiday season.

“Leaving vehicles unlocked or valuables in plain sight is an invitation for thieves to steal your values. Our police service wants people to take the time to keep their property safe,” said Chief Robert Keetch. “Thieves are also looking for anything in a vehicle that allows them to engage in identity theft. Don’t give them the opportunity. Keep anything with your personal information with you.”

Locally officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Community Relations and Crime Prevention Section will be attending the Station Mall during the holiday season and will be speaking with shoppers about the Lock it OR Lose it Campaign.

An unlocked door or an open window is an invitation to thieves.  The goal of the “Lock it or Lose it “campaign is to remind drivers to always:

-Roll up their vehicle’s windows

-Keep valuables out of sight

-Lock their doors and

-Pocket their keys

Prevention is the best way to avoid being a victim of crime. By taking some of the steps mentioned you can protect yourself and your property.

Traditionally a small notice is placed on vehicles to remind motorists of these points they should remember.  However, our Service will be engaging with shoppers inside the mall. This also allows officers to spend some time discussing other crime prevention issues such as ensuring their home is secure when they leave and to encourage them to call the police if they see anyone suspicious around their neighbour’s homes as well.

It only takes thieves seconds to steal your property.  Do your job; don’t help them with theirs.
