Ottawa – Advocacy groups make a difference in our communities every day, according to Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, MP Carol Hughes.
Rising in parliament Hughes paid tribute to the work of the Maplegate House for Women which provides critical services to Elliot Lake and area.
“Advocacy groups do so much to help our communities that it is hard to imagine how we could get by without them.” said Hughes. “In Elliot Lake, the Maplegate House for Women has been a rock for the area’s most vulnerable, but they have ambitious plans to do even more.”
Hughes noted that Maplegate has plans for growth and makes it possible for others in the community to help their neighbours.
“In addition to running an emergency shelter for abused women and their children, Maplegate is adding a transitional house for women and a new men’s shelter to the community,” said Hughes. “On top of that, they actively engage people in the area so that everyone has the opportunity to help their neighbours in need.”
That was the case on Saturday, when Maplegate brought together volunteers, sponsors and organizers to host the Coldest Night of the Year Walk for Homelessness.
“Billed as family-oriented and fun, the Elliot Lake event raised 24,000 dollars to help Maplegate serve the most vulnerable in our society,” said Hughes. “I encourage all Members to join me in thanking charities like Maplegate who make our communities kinder, more compassionate and caring places to live.”
