Alana KenopicTourism Sault Ste. Marie is pleased to welcome its new Manager of Sport Tourism and Special Events. Alana Kenopic was hired for the position last week. In this role, she’ll be working with partner organizations to secure and support major sports tournaments and other events that draw visitors to the community.

Alana has a wealth of experience in marketing and development. For more than three years, she worked at Sault College as Advancement Manager and Advancement and Alumni Relations Officer. Prior to that, Alana was a Community Relations and Marketing Manager at Collegiate Heights Retirement Residence. She is also a former volunteer Board member for Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District.

Alana holds an Honours degree in Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism, along with a Bachelor of Education degree, from Lakehead University. In October 2014, she joined the Tourism Sault Ste. Marie team in a contract role as Coordinator of Meetings and Conventions. With recent staffing changes, and following a competitive hiring process, an opportunity arose to have her stay with the organization in another position.

Between 2008 and 2014, Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, working with its community partners, secured or supported 392 sports tournaments and conferences. This activity attracted well over 70,000 visitors and injected $33.7 million of direct spending into the local economy. These events also generated millions of more dollars in indirect, induced and spinoff economic activity.

With Tourism Sault Ste. Marie support, some of the major sports tournaments held in the community in recent years include the 2015 Ontario Regional Synchronized Skating Championship, 2014 U-12 Provincial Ringette Championship, 2013 Telus Cup, 2012 CARHA Hockey World Cup, 2011 Hap Ki Do Canadian Open, 2010 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, 2009 Canadian Major Football League Championship, and 2008 Little NHL Hockey Tournament.
