Sault Ste. Marie, ON (May 14, 2018) – What impact does the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation (SSMEDC) have on the community? To answer this question while sharing information with citizens and partners, the organization released its 2017 Annual Report this week. The publication highlights activity and results generated. Staff presented the figures at the May 14 City Council meeting.

In 2017, the SSMEDC processed more than 1,900 inquiries from entrepreneurs and delivered over 950 client consultations. The organization also made 17 formal pitches to external investors and companies, facilitated 85 business support seminars and workshops, and took part in 66 outreach and networking events.

This activity generated 184 new business startups and 38 expansions, which created more than 300 jobs and retained over 290 jobs. A list of these companies, along with the programs they were supported by, is available in the SSMEDC’s 2017 Annual Report.

In 2017, the SSMEDC’s Tourism Sault Ste. Marie division attracted 31 conferences and sports tournaments, which generated more than 26,000 visitor days and $4.3 million in direct visitor spending. Staff also sold 5,652 vacation packages, which garnered 14,000 visitor days and $1.5 million in direct visitor spending. As well, the division secured 204 motor coach tours and other groups, which generated 26,000 visitor days.

Tourism Sault Ste. Marie also hosted 23 familiarization (FAM) tours with visiting travel writers and other media. This activity generated $1.6 million in advertising exposure for the community. As well, staff worked to attract 26 cruise ship visits in 2017, which was the busiest year ever for luxury passenger vessel traffic.
