Both area NDP candidates restated their party’s commitment to provide needed funds to keep the Huron Central Railway operating its freight service east of the Sault to Sudbury.
The NDP had committed to providing 4-million per year for five years to Huron Central during last year’s byblection campaign and Sault candidate Michele McCleave-Kennedy and Algoma-Manitoulin’s Micahel Mantha the incumbent says that commitment remains in place.
The candidates say the railway company will discontinue operations by the end of the year because the Wynne Liberals failed to keep the railway economically viable.
Liberal candidate Jaclynne Hamel says 15 million had previously been provided by her party 8-years ago and just recently Huron Central was approved for over 880-thousand dollars in NOHFC funding and they will continue to work with the company.
PC candidate Ross Romano says he has been fighting for the short rail line operation since last fall when the issue first arose calling on the Premier to save this vital piece of infrastructure and he is in the best position to continue that advocacy after the June 7th vote.
