The private operator of the northern gaming bundle including Sault Ste. Marie’s Casino is cutting staff.
Western based Gateway Casinos carried out a review of its operations with the aim of improving efficiencies and has introduced new technologies and has reduced hours in some locations.
United Steelworkers Area Coordinator Marc Ayotte has confirmed that more than a dozen union positions will be cut at our local casino.
The workers impacted are members of Steelworkers Local 8748 and they include both full time and part time positions.
The Sault Casino has a total workforce of 150 which includes both full and part-time positions.
It was last May that the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation signed a 20-year agreement with Gateway Casinos to take over the northern gaming bundle with the requirement of retaining existing employees for at least one year.
